Hui-Huang Hsu is the President of Tamkang University and a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Taiwan. Throughout his distinguished academic career, he has combined excellence in research, higher education, and academic leadership.
Prior to assuming the presidency in August 2026, Prof. Hsu served as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College of Engineering, and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at Tamkang University. From January 2019 to July 2022, he was Counselor for Science and Technology at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he promoted scientific and technological collaboration between Taiwan and Vietnam. He also served as President of the Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence (TAAI) from 2017 to 2018.
Prof. Hsu received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida in 1994. He is the editor of Big Data Analytics for Sensor-Network Collected Intelligence (Elsevier, 2017). With more than three decades of experience in research and higher education, his research interests include machine learning, data mining, ambient intelligence, biomedical informatics, and multimedia processing. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 papers in international journals and conference proceedings and has actively contributed to the advancement of artificial intelligence research, interdisciplinary innovation, and international academic collaboration.
Abstract of the Invited Talk
Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, is advancing at an unprecedented pace and rapidly reshaping how people work, learn, create, and solve problems. As AI becomes deeply integrated into everyday life, AI fluency is emerging as a fundamental competency in higher education. Beyond learning how to use AI effectively, students must develop the ability to engage with AI ethically, critically, and productively.
This transformation calls for a fundamental rethinking of higher education. Traditional pedagogies that emphasize rote memorization are becoming increasingly inadequate, while cultivating higher-order thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and lifelong learning has never been more important. Assessment practices must also evolve to reflect these new educational priorities, moving beyond conventional examinations and assignments toward more authentic and AI-aware approaches.
At the same time, AI enables more personalized and data-informed education. Through AI-powered learning analytics, student progress can be monitored continuously, allowing timely feedback, adaptive instruction, and precision learning tailored to individual needs. AI can also automate many routine administrative and instructional tasks, enabling faculty members to devote more time to mentoring students, advancing research, and fostering innovation. Furthermore, the emergence of agentic AI is transforming AI from a passive tool into an active collaborator, creating new opportunities for AI assistants and AI co-workers to support teaching, learning, and academic operations.
This talk will examine how AI is transforming higher education, exploring its implications for pedagogy, assessment, student learning, faculty roles, and institutional practices. It will also discuss the key opportunities and challenges that universities must address to prepare learners and institutions for the AI era.
