Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Platform Technology (PT)

Dr. Ka Lok Man

Professor,

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China

Dr. Man holds a Dr. Eng. in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, and a PhD in Computer Science from Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He is currently a Professor at the School of Advanced Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, China, and an Honorary Recognized Professor at the Dept. of Computer Science, The University of Liverpool, UK. He serves as External PhD supervisor and Examiner at the Dept. of Computer Science, KU, Leuven, Belgium. He is also an Honorary Recognized Professor at Big Data Excellence Centre, Kazimieras Simonavičius University, Lithuania and a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Informatics, Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania respectively.

He has about 20 years of international teaching experience, several years of industrial experience in integrated circuit design and have been engaging in many industry-oriented research projects in Microelectronics and Computer Science, many of them in cooperation with STMicroelectronics, Synopsys and LG. Prior to joining the XJTLU, he taught in two European universities: University College Cork (Ireland) and Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands). During his previous sabbaticals, he also taught in two Korean universities: Yonsei University and Myongji University. he has a good publication record and to date (in August, 2023) has more than 600 published academic articles including textbooks/reference books, edited books, journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings.

Currently, he is supervising/co-supervising about 20 PhD students, and a number of UG & MSc students and research assistants in the areas of artificial intelligence/deep learning/machine learning/data mining, wireless sensor networks, communication, middleware, IOT, photovoltaics, image/video processing, signal processing and cloud computing, VR, blockchain, radar technology and IC design.

In addition, he has been a committee member, reviewer, session chair and/or general chair/co-chair of 250+ IEEE, IASTED, FTRA and IAENG conferences. He is also the editor-in-chief/editor of over 70 international scientific and engineering journals as well as guest lead editor of many journal special issues indexed in SCI, EI, SCOPUS and/or ESCI databases. In the past few years, he has been awarded with the research grants, teaching grants, subsidies, and honorariums totaling more than USD 1,000,000 from government agencies, national research councils, research associations and industry. Moreover, he has been frequently invited to give keynote speeches at premier international conferences and seminars in world leading universities. Overall, he has received about 50 international recognition and awards both from academia and industry.

He has established the Wireless Sensor Network Laboratory at the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, and the Data Mining Laboratory of the International Business School, both at XJTLU. In addition, he is currently the Director of the University Research Centre of Artificial Intelligence in Internet of Things (AI-IOT) at XJTLU.

Abstract of Dr. Man's Invited Talk

During the last decade, many countries have adopted in recent years road-map for developing the future infrastructure in emerging Platform Technology (PT) areas such as automobile, big data processing technology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, grid computing and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Recent progress in Deep Learning and Machine Learning have unleashed some of the promises of Artificial Intelligence (AI), moving it from the realm of toy applications to a powerful tool that can be leveraged across a wide number of industries. In recognition of these, this Keynote Speech has selected Artificial Intelligence and Platform Technology as its central theme. This Keynote Speech presents the state of the art of the AI-PT: Hybrid Emerging Research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Platform Technology (PT) along with research challenges and opportunities that would be of interest to researchers getting into this exciting field.
